The artist’s idea
Five butterfly wings
Horatio Law chose the butterfly as a symbol of migration and transformation.
The idea grew out of conversations with East Portland’s cultural communities. The five unfolding wings reflect the immigrant histories of Gateway’s residents and the neighborhood’s growth as a welcoming place.
Squares of dichroic glass fill the wings above a chrysalis-like base. Lighting gives the sculpture a different appearance after dark.
We fabricated five stainless steel wings and the tapered, perforated base beneath them. The folds and openings in the wings give each one its shape around the colored glass.
Stainless steel fabrication by Western Iron Works. Glasswork completed by others.

Artwork materials: stainless steel, dichroic glass and LEDs.
