Fledge at
Desert Hills
Anne Storrs designed Fledge around a branching tree and geometric nest—a metaphor for the middle school years. We fabricated the sculpture for Desert Hills Middle School in 2019.
The title refers to nurturing a young bird until it is ready to fly. Here, the school becomes a nest: a place for students to learn, develop their abilities and prepare to move into the wider world.
Stainless steel and automotive paint connect the natural forms to the school’s architectural columns. The open branches extend the tree-and-nest imagery across the school wall.
The sculpture
in the shop
Working from Anne Storrs’s artistic concept, we fabricated the stainless steel tree and nest. The shop view shows the curved strips, layered construction and orange center before the piece was mounted on the building.
On the
school wall
The front view shows the full height of the piece. From the side, the overlapping sections stand out from the brickwork.
