Fabricating the two forms

We fabricated this commission from Lee Kelly’s artistic design and delivered it to a private client in Sun Valley, Idaho.

The sculpture pairs a tall stepped column with a shorter form containing a circular opening. Straight sides, angled returns and a curved inner wall give the pieces their depth.

The circular and stepped forms

In this design, angled steps repeat along both forms. The tall column makes a narrow vertical profile; the circular opening gives a view through the shorter piece.

Up close, the broad faces and deep side surfaces make the geometry clear.

Remembering Lee Kelly

1932–2022

Lee Kelly was a leading figure in Pacific Northwest sculpture, known for large steel works in parks, civic spaces and private collections.

Born in McCall, Idaho, in 1932, he moved to Portland with his family in 1945 and graduated from the Museum Art School in 1959. His work ranged from painting and drawing to monumental sculpture, with travels in Asia and Mexico influencing the forms and ideas he explored.

In 1963, Lee and artist Bonnie Bronson bought a former dairy farm near Oregon City. They made it their home and studios, and developed the sculpture garden known as Leland Iron Works.

The Portland Art Museum celebrated his career with a major retrospective in 2010. Lee died in 2022 at age 89. His sculptures remain part of the Northwest’s public landscape and are held in collections around the world.
