The artist’s idea

The landscape behind Stratum

Mikyoung Kim based Stratum on the geology and landscape of the Willamette River Valley.

Stratum is a sequence of sculptural totems along the bridge approach. Layers of formed materials evoke the region’s land, water, and sky, creating a gateway into the Sellwood neighborhood.

The pieces also define the planted drainage areas along the street. Kim designed the gateway to be experienced in motion: the rhythm of the forms changes with the pace of the person passing through.
